The NJ Hammerheads UWR Club from Newark, NJ is hosting the 2025 USA Underwater Rugby National Championships in two categories, mixed and women. The championships will take place at the JFL Recreation Center in Newark, NJ
The 2025 USA Underwater Rugby National Championships came to an end with fantastic and exciting games all over the group games and finals. Seven mixed teams from New Jersey (3), Massachusets, D.C. area, San Francisco, and Connecticut competed in two groups for the Men’s National Champion title, while four women’s teams from New Jersey, D.C. area, Connecticut and SF/ Colorado Mix participated on a double round robin for the women’s Championships

In group A the top contenders ended up being the defending champions NJ Hammerheads and Nuwr Sea Lions A, both local clubs and long-time rivals from Newark, NJ. The game that decided their final standing on the group ended with a 1-1 tie that went into an exciting penalty shoot-out where the NJ Hammerheads won 4-3, securing the first place in the group.
Boston in group B had a less painful path to the 1st place on the group and ended up facing Nuwr Sea Lions A on the semi-finals where the local team Sea Lions A got a 2-0 victory over Boston Narwhals securing their spot on the final game. NJ Hammerheads faced DC Devil Rays who as a team have been growing fast in the US but still lost to the Hammerheads 0-6.
The Mixed division then had a re-match from the group stage where again the NJ Hammerheads sprinted on the score in the first half with a 1-0 advantage, but in the second half the Sea Lions A got the equalizer goal to push the game to a definition with a penalty shoot-out. The first to take the penalty shoot-out was Hector Escobar from the Sea Lions with an espectacular goal over Juan Riomana who defended the basket really well. On the Hammerheads side the ball from Sebastian Giraldo went into the basket butthe score was invalidated by an aparent attacking foul, that decide the Championship in favor of the Nuwr Sea Lions A as the new 2025 USA National Champions.
On the ladies side the competition between the four participating teams was scheduled as a double round robin. None of the teams had a clear tournament having all of them lost at least a game in the two rounds. The top teams where the defending Champions the New Jersey Hammerheads Ladies and the DC Devil Rays Ladies, but the latest where relegated prior to the start of the tournament and participated as an exhibition team for non compliance with the invited foreign player rule.
