New Jersey Hammerheads coach on the 2013 European Underwater Rugby Championships

Jose Echeverry, coach of the New Jersey Hammerheads Underwater Rugby team, and former 2003 USA National Team player, was invited to participate as referee during the 2013 Underwater Rugby European Open Junior Championship held in the city of Copenhagen, Denmark last November.

Coach Echeverry had the opportunity to participate as underwater and deck referee in over eight official matches between national teams and share with experienced international referees as Tito de Morais (Sweden), Olsson (Norway) and Lindell (Finland).

“The level of European game is remarkable for the tactics, speed, and game system ” Echeverry highlights of the teams which were distinguished by their great fitness and performance.

Echeverry says his participation and experience during this tournament will help to share with referees and teams of the North American Tournament, the latest changes regarding rules and refereeing . “The sport is evolving and we must get updated in terms of game rules , refereeing and other aspects of the game”.

Coach Echeverry plans to participate with the New Jersey Hammerheads on the “2014 CanAm Midwestern Underwater Rugby Championship” to be held on January 24-26 2014 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  http://canammidwesternchampionships.com/uwrugby/

CAMO wins the “6th North American UWR Tournament”

The past weekend (Oct 5-6) was held the “6th North American Underwater Rugby Tournament – Brantford 2013”. We have the unconditional assistance of club CAMO and The New Jersey Hammerheads, plus the local team Liberation.

It was a very successful event, where CAMO club from Montreal keep its leadership winning the tournament in an exciting final against the Hammerheads from New Jersey.

In this 6th version its was clear the improvement of new players that make the most of it after each tournament. Also all 3 clubs make they part promoting the sport having several new players that are now part of the growing UWR family in North America. Specially team liberation has a big improvement with 14 players compared from the last tournament when only had 7 players.

Future looks promising in North America for UWR and specially now that we have a new tournament next January in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

CAMO wins the 5th North American Underwater Rugby Tournament

During the weekend of May 4th, 2013, Club Camo from Montreal hosted the 5th version of the North American Underwater Rugby Tournament.

Participant teams from Canada (Camo A, Liberation and Camo B) and  USA (New Jersey and Quincy UWR) played a qualifying round robin from which the first two teams would play the final game for first place, while the other three teams would play a final round robin for the 3rd place.

Club Camo participated with two teams being CAMO A the most experienced and CAMO B,  a team of a few experienced players and mostly new and underwater hockey players participating on a UWR tournament for the first time.

Camo A team was very strong during the tournament and won the first place in the final game defeating the New Jersey Hammerheads 4.1

New Jersey was also strong during the tournament but lost twice against the host team Camo A, loosing their first game in the round robin by 0-3

Quincy UWR qualified third on the round robin and on the final round robin for 3rd place defeated Club liberation and Camo B.

Camo B, the team with mostly underwater hockey players was the surprise team when they won their only game in the final round robin against Club Liberation 4.3 in a very excitng game, getting the final 4th place of the tournament.

Club Liberation with only seven players got fifthplace, but defeated Camo B in the first round 6.2.

This was the first time that “top scorer “and “best defense” awards were given on a NA UWR tournament.

Best defense was awarded to CAMO A with only one goal against.

Top scorer was awarded to Tim Burke from Quincy UWR (Boston) with 13 goals

UW Rugby arrives to San Francisco California!

Natalia Silva and Balazs Nagy along with other underwater sports enthusiasts began formal underwater Rugby practices in the city of San Francisco, bringing underwater rugby to the west cost, thanks to the collaboration of the UW Hockey Club Sea Lions.

3rd. North American Underwater Rugby Tournament Results

The third North American Underwater Rugby Tournament was hosted by Club CAMO Montréal the past June 23 2012. Despite several players and clubs couldn’t attend the event, the tournament was played with the participation of clubs from Canada and the USA: Hammerheads-New Jersey; Liberation-Brantford and CAMO-Montreal. It was a great opportunity to improve the level of the participants and motivate new rugby players to train harder for the next competition.

The tournament showed a high play level as well a remarkable technical advance in the participating teams. CAMO UW Rugby Club highlight by the event organization with a great scenario, logistic and a group of highly motivated new players who demostrated a remarkable progress.

Liberation team showed an outstanding improvement that allowed them to play an unforgettable match against CAMO; in the very last minute Liberation score and won this close game 4-3.ress in this tournament.

Finally the New Jersey Hammerheads who had the smaller team with a couple of CAMO players, proved that with few players but a lot of heart you can win a tournament.

3rd. North American Underwater Rugby Tournament June 23-24, 2012
